Life in the FAST lane……

The Last Resort (song)

Remember that old Eagles song, Life in The Fast Lane?  Now, please, please… hear me out before you label me a heretic and click away to some

other blog with pictures of the virgin mother and everything that is holy! Jan. 8th starts our commitment to the 21 day fast, and although the Eagles and their song has no referencing to fasting, I think we can find some common ground.

I know, I know… this song is bad!  The references to sex and drugs and everything in between is not wholesome, nor is it uplifting.  But you have to admit that the tune is catchy!!  It has stuck with me all these years from my “19 Something” days. (Sorry couldn’t  resist using another song reference)  Now back to my thought.

This song reflects about all the evils in the world and how disastrous they can be if we become caught up in them. The whole thought here is more stuff, more drugs, more sex.  Faster, faster, totally addicted and consumed; which by it’s very nature is contrary to God’s word and life in the Spirit. Galatians 5:19-21(NIV):

“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

So, why the reference?  Why the promotion of this song, you may ask?  I think that it is important for us to realize that our ” FAST LANE” is the path that leads to life.  Our “FAST LANE” will take us further and deeper than any “fast lane” the world has to offer.  Taking time at the beginning of the year and consecrating it to Jesus is the best thing we can do!  Jesus said that he has come to give us more life, not less!  This more life that Jesus is talking about is found when we enter the “LANE” filled with prayer and fasting. God does something to our heart, to our mind, in our circumstance when we pray and fast.  He fills us with his spirit and his desires.  Galatians 5:22-25(NIV):

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.  Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

So, as we enter into these 21 days of prayer and fasting let’s keep in step with God’s Spirit!  Let’s experience “Life in the Fast Lane” God’s way!  Let’s ignore everything that would try and stop us from pursuing God in the days ahead and let’s go all in to see God move in our hearts, our friends, our families, our churches and our world. If we do, I believe He will take us down a freeway filled with hope, faith, and a future! We will enter the highway of more life, if we live “Life in the Fast Lane” God’s way!

Great post, Alex! I am more often crippled by asking God for TOO LITTLE of what He actually has planned for me. If I go “all-in” during this 21-days set aside to seek Him, I have to also trust that He will stretch me, make me big enough to hold all the goodness He has prepared.

Can we find ourselves FATTER at the end of this fast? You bet! FAT with the fruit of the Spirit of God!
